The Pit Wheels were landmarks seen across the country for over a hundred years
Seaham Colliery, known as The Knack, employed 1,700 men mining 2,500 to 2,800 tons of coal a day from far out under the sea. The site is now a school.
Within four years of the mines being closed all visible traces of mining were gone.
